Side View 01 – Mark…Set…Go!
“Don’t get sleepy on me now,
Dynamite,” Mark said softly as she ran her hand down the barrel of her
high-powered sniper rifle. “I’ll need
you to go off at a moment’s notice”
The gun had earned its name for
several reasons: the recoil that could break bones if not handled correctly,
the force that could propel a bullet much farther than her other rifles, and
the noise of thunder as the trigger was pulled.
It was for that last reason that she had set herself up on a clock
tower.
The clock ticked behind her, a
signal to Mark that she had five minutes until she needed to pull the
trigger. Her target would walk past her
field of view at one o’clock giving
her only one shot. It was exhilarating
and nerve wracking no matter how many times she did her job.
Mark took a few deep breaths until
her breathing slowed down to match the pulse of Dynamite. She was a professional who could stay calm
and rational under all circumstances. She
occupied her mind by watching the world through her scope. The sniper
calculated how much higher she would have to aim to compensate for
gravity. A flagpole was almost in the
middle of her field of view and, as annoying as it was to have it in the way,
it made it easier to adjust her aim.
“Red alert,
Dyna,” Mark whispered as she zoomed in the west end of the plaza. “He’s early.”
Her target
had walked past this plaza everyday at one
o’clock for the past week.
Of course, today of all days, the target just had to be early. With how loud Dynamite was she only had one
chance and her target might be out of view when the clock struck.
“This will be
fun,” Mark laughed. “I can tell you’re
excited, too.”
The target
walked across the plaza, pausing to talk to someone. It would have been an easy shot if the target
not stopped right behind the flagpole.
Mark grinned as her finger rubbed the trigger. Her specialty was the impossible shots.
The bell
tower shook with the hour and Mark squeezed the trigger. Her body moved with the recoil while her mind
hurtled along with the bullet. Through
sheer will she skimmed around the flagpole as she moved against the laws of
physics to home in on her hiding target.
A perfectly
impossible shot with a hint of irony as the bullet went in one ear and out the
other. Close enough anyway. Mark shook her head clear as she rubbed her
shoulder. With a smile the assassin
pulled a lollipop out of her bag and patted Dynamite.
“I wonder
what the Sharizi will say about that shot?”
