Write a Novel in a Month? It really does seem like a crazy idea to write 50,000 words in a month. Probably because I am already off to a poor start. A very poor start. I'm not even trying to write a novel. Just 50,000 words. Oh well. Hopefully I'll get better as the month goes on.
So, I'm actually not too surprised that I got no comments telling me what people wanted to know about my fairytales. It was just my inflated sense of ego thinking that everyone already knew what I was talking about. So, I'll try to post something interesting right now. First I need to think of something interesting.
Many fairytales have variants or else other stories from other sources that are similar. It is quite fun to take these similar stories and combine what I like of them to create a twist on the old. One such story I am working on doing this with is The Twelve Dancing Princesses. The story is about twelve sisters who sneak out at night to dance. Many people are probably familiar with that story. A similar story that many are probably not familiar with is called Kate Crackernuts. In this story there is one prince who is forced by fairies to dance all night and so he is an invalid during the day. It is the princess who figures everything out, while freeing her stepsister (who she likes) from a curse. And then the two princesses marry the prince and his brother.
What I liked about the second story was that the prince was not well during the day because he had been up dancing all night. It made perfect sense. If a person was dancing all night they'd have more problems than worn-out shoes. So, rather than having these princesses voluntarily dance their lives away, my retelling is going to involve a curse among other things. The princesses aren't enjoying this situation very much. The dancing part feels like a dream and they can't get out of it. They're practically becoming night owls and are unable to do all the things they love.
I know that in one version, the hero is a soldier. In another, the hero is a gardner. In a third, the hero is a cobbler. I'm trying to figure out how best to use those there things. Whether I have three guys, or have a soldier who's the son of the gardner or something like that. Certainly I have plenty of guys who try but fail. Oh, and failier does not mean you get beheaded. It means, for some, that you get trapped in the dancing world. I like a good party now and again, but one every night that you could not escape from would be the death of me.
So, that is all I will post today. I have been thinking of posting actual writing on Saturday. Perhaps a short snippet where my dear readers can meet a few characters. Anyway, I shall hopefully write more by the time Thursday shows up. Until then, feel free to comment if you wonder about a story or a character or anything in general. Fare thee well till Thrusday.
Dear Deflated ego (DE),
ReplyDeleteI thought you wanted responses to the actual writing, not to your thoughts about writing or the preview. I've liked the twists where the princesses don't like their dancing and that it's a curse to them. That said, It's not one of my favorite fairy tales. But a good place to start. I like several fairy tales. Lesser known ones: Rose Red and Snow White; The Goose Girl (There are two, one is now much better known thanks to Shannon Hale and I like the other fairy tale by the same name. They're both good.)
My favorite, Beauty and the Beast. If you use my favorite, I'll probably be really critical of it because I love it so much. FYI.
Thanks DE. You are the best.
Sincerely, a Devoted Reader.
