“This is so cool,” Tiffany said as they reached the huge open area inside the cave.
“Why did we come along, again?” Agent James asked as he squirmed through the tiny opening.
“Driver’s turning out to be a director a lot like Bosere was,” Agent Marc Salazar said as he stretched.
“Isn’t Kazei supposed to be the director?” Brad asked.
“He is,” Agent Kristine Salazar answered. “At least in title. You’ve been with us for a while, but you still have a lot to learn about the details of how we work. It can be a little complicated.”
“Not that mysterious,” Carmine said. “I offered to take Tiffany rock climbing to go cave exploring and Dev just wanted us to be chaperoned.”
Tiffany laughed, but had to admit that was the truth. It was one of the many unwritten agency rules. She knew that Agent Driver trusted Carmine, but Agent Driver also had a tendency to start finding strange new ways of ‘training’ agents. It was always interesting. The agents that were assigned to come along were the two new guys, even though they really were not all that new anymore, and one of the few married couples that served as agents.
“I never even knew this was here,” Kris said as she looked around, the light on her helmet casting shadows across the ancient drawings that covered the area. “I would have thought someone would have tried to excavate this place.”
“They don’t know it’s here,” Carmine explained. “I had found it when I was a teenager. Seeing that it’s rather hard to get to, it is understandable why it still remains a secret.”
“So who knows of this place?” Marc asked, curious.
“Counting you guys, the number of people who know the exact location is about thirteen, to my knowledge. We’ll probably run into three of them. Tech loves this place.”
“Why haven’t you told the media or some archeologist?” Kris wondered.
“This place is haunted,” Agent Moto observed, the first words he had said since they had entered the cave.
“Haunted?” James coughed. “Kai, be serious.”
“I am,” Kai said from where he sat. He looked a little pale. “I can’t explain it, but something just doesn’t feel right.”
“Now you’re giving me the creeps,” Tiffany sighed.
“This place was once a mighty temple,” Carmine explained. “Even I haven’t explored every part, but I have found a room or two with traps, so it is best to stay together and to stay tethered.”
“You brought me to a haunted cave?”
“Haunted isn’t the word I would use,” Carmine shrugged.
“And what word would you use?” Kai asked as he finally stood back up. “You’re too aware to not have noticed something strange.”
“When I think haunted, I think either sad or malicious,” Carmine explained.
“Stop this,” Kris snapped. “I hate creepy things and this isn’t helping.”
“You’re right,” Kai said. “Those two definitions don’t seem to work here. Still, something doesn’t seem…aligned.”
“I thought I told you to stop,” Kris cried out. “I am seriously going to smack the next person who makes a creepy comment. Especially you, Marc.”
“I haven’t said anything,” Marc assured.
Agent Tiffany Wilson slowly turned around and looked at the open area. Now that she got a better look, it did look more like a purposefully made room rather than just an act of nature. The natural rock formations were used and it was easy to see what nature had done and where humans had expanded. Tiffany did not get any creepy vibes at all from the place. It just seemed to be seeped in mystery rather than anything else.
“So, what parts of this ancient ruin can we see?” she asked Carmine.
Trust Carmine to have found a creepy ancient ruin for his date location.
