Story 22 - Part 1 - Down to Earth

“Loser cleans the mini-fridge?” Don asked as he held up the controllers.

Tech held up his fingers, indicating that it would be three rounds. It was their midterm stress technique, and also a way of actually cleaning their dorm room. Their RA was more nitpicky than even Don’s mother when it came to cleaning checks.

“I understand the concept of keeping the dorms clean to prolong their life,” Don said as he started up the game. “Still, we’re in the most ghetto dorm on campus. The thing is slated for demo next semester. It’s nearly hopeless to clean.”

Tech did not bother trying to sign an answer. Instead he just creamed his roommate at Elemental Warrior in just two rounds. They still had the third round anyway. Loser got the fridge, and the winner got to clean the window. The routine was simple: study, play, clean.

With a knock on the window, Tech got Don’s attention. --Ruke.--

“Helloooooooo neighbors!” Ruke sang out in the hallway.

“Knock like a normal person,” Don called back. “And it’s unlocked.”

Pushing the door open, Ruke had a goofy grin as he knocked. Ruke’s roommate was barely tolerable so Ruke spent a lot of time hanging out with Don and Tech. Ruke was studying film and theater and always managed to get free tickets to something every week. This week it was tickets to a play that he was in.

“So, I would suggest finding a date with a sense of humor,” Ruke said as he tossed them four tickets. “This isn’t some classic, but more like a combination between slapstick and a pun-a-thon.”

“So,” Don said. “It’s basically stupid humor.”

“At least half of it,” Ruke admitted. “Now I’ve got twenty more tickets to give away.”

Tech held up his hand and tilted his head as he listened to the people who were coming down the dormitory hallway. He recognized his Uncle Carmine immediately, but it took him a little longer to recognize Agent Driver’s voice and even longer to identify Agent Moto. Tech had not really had an opportunity to get to know that last agent.

“Hey Tech and Don,” Carmine said as he knocked while opening the door. “Oh, and the person we’re looking for.”

“Me?” Ruke asked as he looked questioningly at Don and Tech who both shrugged.

“Veruke Svenson?” Agent Driver asked

“Just call me Ruke,” the student answered. “And who are you?”

“Agents Driver and Moto,” Driver said. “You’re not in trouble. We just need to know what happened two nights ago.”

Ruke kept himself very well composed as he carefully studied the two agents. Tech had figured out that Ruke was a police informant around the second week of school. It was not that Tech had meant to listen, but dorm walls were pretty thin. When Don asked what was up, Tech quickly explained.

“A cop informant?” Don said out loud. “That’s cool.”

“How did you know?” Ruke asked.

“Tech probably overheard you is my guess,” Don shrugged. “And these guys have been here at least twice to ask Tech about some hacker or another thing.”

“Explanations can come later,” Agent Driver interrupted. “I don’t mean to be rude, but we really need to know what happened two nights ago. We got the report you gave the cops, but we prefer to ask you directly.”

“What are you looking for?” Ruke wondered. “I don’t think I left anything out.”

“That’s because it wasn’t a part of what you were looking for,” Agent Moto explained. “You had mentioned briefly that a group of people were starting to cause trouble before they got kicked out of the club. We want more information on that.”

--He has a fake id,-- Tech explained to Don before his roommate could ask. --He busts places that sell alcohol to under-aged drinkers.--

--Wow,-- Don signed. --And here I spend my nights in the library.--
