With a yawn, Kai leaned back and paused with his data input. He had to stay late since it was nearing the end of the month. Sometimes it seemed like the last accountants were a bunch of uneducated fools who could not even add single digit numbers. Agent Moto sighed and stood up, locking his computer.
He had never drunk so much water before this assignment. In order to present opportunities where he could run into the other agents, Agent Moto had taken to frequenting the water cooler in the office. Aside from being teased about setting a new record for trips to the bathroom in a day, Kai actually enjoyed the water cooler. He had gotten the reputation of being overly social since he talked to everyone that passed by.
Kai was not normally a gossiper, but the cover had been suggested by Agent Driver and it was a little difficult to say no when it had been presented as a direct challenge. Agent Moto had actually been surprised at how much he enjoyed the socialization. He now knew the social life of nearly everyone in the office, plus some. As the gossip guy, he was trusted with only frivolous information, but shallow conversation could be quite telling if you knew how to look deeper.
“Hey,” Kai called out as Agent Driver punched the elevator button. “Got an exciting evening planned?”
“Going to my daughter’s dance recital,” Driver said excitedly.
“Ballet?” Kai asked.
“Yes,” Driver nodded. “I will admit it, I’m glad that she didn’t want to do tap. I have a brother who tapped and it was one of the most annoying things to have someone pick up. At least ballet is quiet.”
“My guess is your brother wouldn’t look good in a tutu,” Kai laughed.
“I think I would have hurled if I had to see him in tights,” Agent Driver agreed as the elevator chimed. “Are you working late?”
“Attack of the
Kai gave a cheesy grin as Agent Driver escaped into the elevator and left the building. Agent Moto drained one more cup of water and then crumpled the cup, pitching it into the trashcan with a perfect arc. It seemed like casual conversation, but the message was flawlessly passed. Driver had tapped a phone line and he wanted Michaels to clear it out as soon as possible.
Regg was possibly the highlight of the night for everyone who had to work late. He was just a trash can emptying, computer dusting janitor, but he always showed up with style. Mostly it was just headphones and a really loud singing voice, but dancing through the cubicles was pretty entertaining as well. In these four weeks of undercover work, Kai now found he enjoyed the senior agent’s antics. In fact, he saw Agent Michaels almost more than he saw Brad or Driver.
It was nearly two more hours before Regg arrived through the elevator. He was singing some angsty girl song and got a round of applause when he hit a particularly high note. Kai saved his work three times before joining the rest of the late night workers who were making requests. After the first few times of Agent Micheals’ song and dance routine he ended up becoming the live radio of the overtime workers.
“Do you know D.Rap’s latest?” someone asked.
“I know his whole disc, but rap isn’t my best,” Regg admitted.
“How about something that would just be funny to watch him dance to?” Kai suggested.
“Do you polka?” one of the female workers asked.
“Only if I want to get dizzy,” Regg laughed.
“Maybe some of that old school, musical tap dancing routine,” Kai said. “Can’t you just see him on the stage?”
“Oh, I bet you’d make a great Fred Kelly,” another woman suggested.
“Hey, Radio,” a guy interrupted. “Forget the dancing and sing the new Firerod song.”
“Oh, mine next,” Kai called out as he joined in on the playlisting. “On a Roll by Lookout.”
Hahaha. Who wouldn't love Regg?
