It was actually a three-way tie. So my wonderful husband read and gave his
vote to break the tie.

“Ok,” Nesia said as she devoured
her breakfast. “Well, I guess I’ll start
with something that was bothering me since I woke up. I knew I wasn’t Kate, and you call me
Blue. So, why is everyone else convinced
that I’m Katherine Algernon?”
Kale looked up from his latest
origami creation as he thought about the answer. “I know that you look a lot like the actual
Katherine. Face, height, build. I remember Cam saying
that you guys could almost pass as sisters with the exception of hair. Of course, Cam took
care of that.”
“What am I?” Nesia asked. “Her double?”
“I guess so,” Kale shrugged. “What I do know is that you have covered for
her in the past when she needs to make a public appearance and doesn’t want
to. Card received the contract and you
agreed on it. I only hear the stories
after you’re done.”
Some flashes of memory came, but no
actual reliving. Nesia could remember
talking with a woman with long blond hair while she herself had short
hair. They were on good terms. Not quite best friends, but good
acquaintances. The first time Nesia had
covered for Kate had been several years
ago, she could not remember the exact number of years. She did remember, though, that it had been
for a wedding. Most likely the third or
fourth time the Algernon gossip couple, Kate’s parents, had remarried to each
other.
“How are you doing?” Kale asked.
“I think I’m fine,” Nesia
answered. “How are you?”
“Good,” Kale responded, looking
amused at her automatic question.
“So I’m Kate’s body double, but why
would I agree to be her marriage double?”
“I’m not sure,” Kale shrugged as he
started cleaning up after breakfast. “I
don’t actually know what you were doing.
I don’t think it was just dating for her. Cam would know more on
what exactly you were doing.”
“You said last night that Cam
would be here,” Nesia said. “Do you know
when? I think we’re friends so I would
like to meet her…again.”
“I’ll give her a call and let her
know she can come. You look well
enough. I know I am being cautious, but
your mind does not seem to be as fragile as others. Currently I see no harm in trigger anything.”
Nesia waited as Kale made a phone
call. She had a lot to mull over in her
mind as she waited. Finally, she had a
confirmation that she had been wondering about.
She was not Kate, but rather a look-a-like. Of course, Blue was not her real name
either. But people she felt were friends
seemed to call her that. She would have
to remember to ask someone about that nickname.
Eventually there was a knock at the
door and Kale went and answered it.
Inside walked an older woman that was about between the ages of being
considered a mother figure and being a college friend. Cam had the look of a
world-wise older sister who was always up for a little bit of fun. Nesia remembered talking often with Cam.
“Oh, Blue, my little manikin,” Cam
said, squeezing Nesia with a tight hug.
“I was so worried about you.”
“Awww,” Nesia said, trying to keep
from laughing. “I appreciate the
reference of being a mindless doll.”
Cam laughed
and finally let go, taking a good look at the woman before. “It’s a good thing I came. You’re hair is starting to loose its curl and
your blonde is growing out a little.”
“Cam, what
was I doing here?” Nesia asked. “I mean,
why was I being Kate in a marriage and everything?”
“Sit down while I fix your hair,” Cam
said. “And what do you want? The long version or the short version?”
************
What should Nesia go for?
1 – The long version that might be too much for her mind
2 – The short version that might not have enough information
