Story 16 - Part 4 - A Shade of Grey

The arresting authorities came a few days later and the five people they picked up for questioning did not look happy, nor did they go quietly. Brad kept an emotionless face as one of the red faced bosses let out a string of cuss words while he was led out. Somewhere in those cuss words was the threat of absolutely destroying whoever was responsible for this supposed outrage.

Agent James sighed as he tried to tune out the background of chattering employees. They were speculating on why several of the top managers were being arrested. Then someone wondered about the company’s future. Once the slew of interns started panicking about losing their positions and having a viable internship, Brad started to give his own input.

“I doubt anyone would blame you for quitting before everything goes down hill,” Brad said straight-faced.

“And how will I pay for my apartment?” one of the college students demanded. “Why’d the cops have to make such a big show of it?”

“Seriously,” another agreed. “Why couldn’t people just leave well enough alone?”

“Well enough alone?” Brad scoffed. “Your supervisor is arrested for illegal activity and you’re basically saying that you would have ignored it?”

“He’s your supervisor as well,” the first intern snapped. “It’s your freaking college career and your life.”

“And imagine what would happen to that if you had stayed with the company and this got out at a later date?” a female intern jumped in on the conversation. “I would rather be jobless and honest than rich and guilty.”

“The world isn’t black and white,” the second intern growled. “That’s a grey question.”

Brad rolled his eyes as the debate raged on. Being an intern was not his worry. His job was to spy and he did a really good job at it, if he was one to boast. They had infiltrated the company with the goal of nailing only one person, but had uncovered a ring of cohorts in the process. With his own hard work, Agent James had discovered the intern supervisor was in the mix. Of course, the supervisor had been a little bit obvious in his supposed theoretical ethics questions.

“He was recruiting you,” Brad said out loud as he glared at the two male interns, realization striking his thoughts. “Were you guys seriously planning on joining a crime ring?”

They looked surprised, completely caught off guard by Brad’s sudden accusation. They were not the only ones, but everyone else seemed to have the decency to at least pretend they were not listening even though it was painfully obvious that they were. The interns’ looked like deer caught in the headlights and then one of them just bolted, proving his guilt as he tried to escape.

“Kai,” Brad called out.

Then the other intern tried to bolt. Agent James did not hesitate for a moment and tackled the young man to the ground. The intern was whimpering and saying that he was innocent, while the other one was cursing loudly and threatening both Brad and Kai and anyone else who thought they could truly stand against what he was calling ‘The Organization’. It seemed rather unoriginal to Brad, but he decided not to mention that.

“We are going to need to ask you a few questions,” an officer said as others handcuffed the interns.

Agent James nodded, feeling slightly embarrassed that he had missed that those two interns were also involved. He really hoped that the entire company would collapse since he was sick and tired of dealing with it. Having half the company arrested was a good excuse to ‘quit’ his supposed internship. The only question now was what he was going to tell the police. The order had been to keep up the cover story until told so otherwise by the director or Agent Driver.

“Now what are we going to do?” the female intern asked, interrupting Brad’s thoughts.

“Like it matters,” Brad growled. “Do what you want. I don’t care.”

“Are you in the black, white, or grey area?” she asked, annoyed. “You’re a jerk and never wanted to be here in the first place, yet you just did a citizen’s arrest. So what are you?”

“None of your business,” Brad snapped.
