Regg yawned as he smashed his alarm clock. The noise did not stop and he hit the offending equipment several more times before he finally picked it up. It was almost
Twenty minutes later, Regg finally got himself up and ready for the afternoon. He ate a bowl of instant oatmeal and wandered down to the apartment lobby. He rapped the envelope he was holding against his leg all the way down the stairs. It was only when he had reached the main level that he remembered to check his phone: One missed call, and one text message. Both were from the same person and Regg grinned as he looked at it. She was waiting in the lobby for him.
“Diamond!” Regg smiled as he spotted his girlfriend talking with Vire.
“Reggie!” the brunette squealed as she nearly knocked him off his feet with her crushing affection. “I was so worried that you had forgotten.”
“Of course not,” Regg assured, even though he nearly had.
“But I hardly see you anymore. You don’t even come to the bar anymore.”
“I’m sorry. I told you I was working nights now.”
Diamond draped herself on Regg’s shoulder and ran her fingers through his hair. She was very touchy-feely, but Agent Michaels did not mind. Despite the fact that she was more girly than every other female that Regg associated with, he found her intelligent and a delight to sing with. He did miss going karaoke bar hopping with her, but he did have to work. He was quite grateful for his job since that is what had resulted in being trapped under a collapsed building with Carmine. With Carmine’s encouragement, Regg had finally asked Diamond out.
“…and I’ve even suggested some lovely places for the reception,” Diamond was saying. “I think it’s just so cute that your neighbors are getting married.”
“Uh, yeah.”
Regg felt his face flush a little. He normally did not space out like that. That was really something that Dev did. With a yawn, Agent Michaels shook his head to wake himself up a little bit more. He had a very important task to do before he could let himself be dragged off to join the crazy crowds at the mall. There were far too many holiday sales right in a row.
“Owens,” Regg called out as he thankfully spotted the older man. “Here’s my rent, by the way.”
With a flick of his wrist, Regg tossed the sealed white envelope across the lobby. Having a former agent as his landlord certainly made passing information so much easier during this assignment. Since he had not gone to the agency office in weeks, he had been able to keep up his cover.
Diamond grabbed his hand and pulled him out of the lobby. Regg briefly wondered how she would react when she finally found out that he was a government agent and not an odd job janitor. Diamond would probably handle it pretty well. If it was up to him, Agent Michaels would have told after the first month of steady dating.
Unfortunately, the agency had some strange rules about information and dating. It was understandable. Agents in all agencies have been proven to spill secrets to those they cared about. Granted, lies were never good for a relationship, but neither was a mole in an agency. Regg really hoped that Diamond would not mind that their relationship was going to be moving on a slightly slow track. She had not protested yet, though she had expressed annoyance with his sometimes unpredictable schedule.
“Oh,” Diamond squealed. “There are so many cute stores. Which one should we go to first?”
“What do you want the most?” Regg asked as he pulled her close while they merged with the pedestrian traffic flow.
“Well, I’ve already got a boyfriend who doesn’t complain about shopping,” she yelled into his ear over the noise level. “So, let’s hit the music store first.”
“At least that one won’t be as crowded.”
