Story 16 - Part 1 - Standing Sentinel

Dev sighed as he waited at his post. It had been a few weeks since he had been able to be on a field assignment but already he felt completely relaxed. Now he understood why Owens had kept turning down the position of director. Bosere still had one more month to retirement, but Agent Driver had discovered that he had been put on the list as acting director. He could still cover strange cases, but if Kazei was ever going to be gone then Dev would be the one in charge. Actually, now that Dev was thinking about it, it seemed that he had gotten the unofficial position of personal advisor to the director.

“Hey, gopher!” the man in the ridiculously huge office yelled.

“Sir!” Dev cried out as he nearly fell out of his chair and ran into the office. “Yes, sir?”

“Go pick up my dry cleaning,” the man said with a wave of his hand.

Agent Driver nodded and hurried back to his desk to pick up his jacket. He actually did not mind playing the part of the gopher. He had access to all of the company files and had actually reorganized them with some extra copies on the side. For the moment, all he and his team could do was watch and wait and gather information.

They had each applied for positions at different times and had managed to get in at a variety of levels. Dev had gotten one of the best positions as an office gopher to one of the top managers. Kai Moto had started out as a lower level accountant, but that guy was so good at math that he had gone up in the ranks. Brad James ended up as an intern and was actually enjoying this undercover position. Regg had the worst position as a night janitor, but he seemed quite content.

Picking up the dry cleaning took only a few minutes, but Dev had picked up on his bosses’ habits pretty quickly. He picked up a newspaper and a random pastry before returning to the office. Even though he bumbled around like a clueless office gopher, Dev was acutely aware of his surroundings. Getting on the good side of every boss he could was the best idea when it came to catching them in the act of espionage.

“Sorry,” Moto said as he nearly ran over Agent Driver.

No papers were passed and eye contact was only briefly made as they bumped into each other. Contact with the other agents was neither planned nor avoided. They even pretended that the others did not exist outside of work. Still, with each run in at work, important information was still passed between everyone. All it took was a way of apologizing or side-stepping to give a hint as to whether or not they were on to something.

Regg was probably the one who was most out of the loop since he worked the night shift. Dev was actually worried since he had not seen Regg in two weeks. When it came to actually spying and sneaking, Agent Michaels was possibly one of the best. The guy could pick any lock and he was pretty smooth when it came to thinking on his feet. Dev trusted Regg, but was starting to feel a little uneasy. That probably meant that something big was about to happen.

Agent Driver delivered the dry cleaning, newspaper, and pastry before returning to his desk. His eyes scanned the workers who were still hanging around past closing time. As much as Dev tried to work long and hard, he could not stay late. He had a wife and children, unlike several of the late night workers, and tonight he was not going to be late for his daughter’s concert.

“Mr. Harris’ office,” Dev said as he snapped up the phone the moment it rang.

“Tell him it’s Frank,” the voice on the other side growled.

“What is the nature of your call?” Dev asked.

“Nothing you need to know,” Frank growled. “Just tell him who it is.”

“I’ll see if he’s available,” Dev said as he paged his boss. “Excuse me sir, but a man by the name of Frank is on the phone asking for you.”

“I’ll take the call,” Mr. Harris growled.

“Very well, sir,” Dev said. “I was going to leave for the night, sir. Do you need anything else after this?”

“Just transfer the call and enjoy the evening,” Mr. Harris said.

Agent Driver transferred the call, and slipped a tap onto the phone. Now all he had to do was get information to Regg to pick it up before the end of the night.
