Story 13 – Part 3 – Trapped Within

Bradley James did not flinch as the gun was put to his head. He and Kai Moto had done their jobs perfectly. The only explanation was that somehow there was a leak in the department. Still, none of that mattered now. They messed up, and now they were stuck. If they could not think of a way of getting out on their own, they would pay with their lives.

They had gotten themselves trapped inside a gang’s territory. The building was a little run down on the outside, but inside it was an impressive fortress. The gang itself was not very large, but they seemed wealthy enough. Brad could hardly make sense of this gang since they hardly made logical sense on their own. Sometimes they behaved like gangsters and other times like spoiled brats. Brad gritted his teeth. He needed more time to analyze the situation.

Unfortunately, it looked like there was no time left. Brad waited for the pull of the trigger, but instead a different bang reached his ears. There were arguing voices as people entered the building. Now that Brad thought about it, he was pretty sure that his captors had locked the building up. That was not comforting. His death was now going to become a show. It was embarrassing.

“Next time, look at the map right side up, loser.”

“Next time, give me the right address.”

The two arguing men walked in. Brad quickly glanced at Kai who slightly raised his eyebrows. The intruders were those other agents: Driver and Michaels. It was actually pretty hard to recognize them. They both had impressive appearances and looked like gang messenger boys. They were also arguing pretty aggressively with each other and it looks like Michaels had a black eye while Driver had a little bit of blood smeared on his face.

“What are you two here for?” one of the captors asked.

“Well, duh,” Michaels said. “You know why we’re here. Jeez. Don’t you ladies communicate? Just give us what we’re here to pick up and we’ll get going.”

“We brought the payment,” Driver said after the captors did not respond. “But our orders are to not show it until you bring out your part.”

“How’d you get in?” a captor demanded.

“Keys,” Michaels answered with plenty of attitude.

“Don’t tick ‘em off,” Driver whined. “Boss’ll get mad at us.”

Michaels and Driver started arguing again while the captors looked like they were still trying to figure out what was going on. The men pointing their guns at Brad and Kai kept quickly glancing up at the fiasco. Brad quickly analyzed the situation in his mind, trying to figure out how to best use this situation. He had no idea why those other two agents were there, and they could be just there to deal with his failure.

“Jerk,” Michaels yelled and he punched Driver.

Driver reeled backwards and into one of the captors. Before Brad and Kai had enough time to react, several of the men were down and Driver and Michaels had their guns out. Driver’s arrogant attitude and assurance of backup caused the other captors to finally set down their weapons. Within moments, all of the captors were unconscious and Brad James and Kai Moto were free.

“Kazei really sent back up?” Kai asked, disbelieving.

“Nope,” Driver grinned. “Bosere just gave us free reign. Hey, Regg, can you hotwire one of these guys’ cars for us?”

“Sure,” Michaels answered. “Let’s go.”

“Wait, what?” Brad demanded. “What’s going on?”

“You know,” Driver said with a yawn, “if you guys want to survive in this agency you need to start breaking rules. Trust me. They don’t do much good when dealing with people who catapult corpses or try to create genetic mutations.”

“Play nice,” Michaels said as he finished rifling through the captors pockets. “Hey, I think I won’t have to hotwire. I’ve found plenty of keys.”

“Play nice?” Driver scoffed. “You’ve come a long way from acting like these two prigs.”

“Who’re you calling prigs?” Brad and Kai demanded at the same time.
