Story 10 – Part 3 – Lightning Strikes Twice

Dev almost sighed with relief as the sprinkler system started. He sincerely hoped that it would clear out the stuff in the air before he ran out of air. Jordan’s warning had come just barely in time, but not everyone had reacted quickly enough. Regg was slumped over and it looked like no one else was moving around. Keeping his gun out, Agent Driver stretch out on the ground and hoped that everything would clear out soon.

“Quickly take the prisoners.” The voice was muffled by a gas mask and Dev tried to remain as unconscious-looking as possible. “Even with the fire alarm no one will see a thing in this weather.”

As the people moved in and started dragging people out, Dev tried to count the different voices and footsteps. There were not enough bad guys for every unconscious body, and the bad guys were picking their targets carefully. General Reeds and Jordan were being picked up since they were high ranking officers, and the other agency’s director was picked up as well. Dev was actually glad that Bosere was out of town, but wondered if the bad guys knew that.

“Grab this one as well,” the leader said as he kicked Driver’s gun away. “He’s at least wearing a suit.”

Dev nearly passed out as they dragged Regg out of the room, and when he finally took a breath it seemed that the air had cleared out a little. He waited for a few moments for the silence to confirm that the intruders had left the room, then he decided to risk it and get up. The sprinkler system was still going and had cleaned out the air well enough, but Dev could feel his head spinning a little. Grabbing his gun, Dev peaked out into the hallway.

Flashing lights and sprinkler systems were all that greeted him and there was no sight of Agent Michaels. After spending a few breaths thinking about what he would do if he was on the other side, Dev sped down the hallway. He flipped his jacket inside out so that it was a dark red rather than blue. He was hoping it would keep the intruders from recognizing him.

As he pushed open the door, Agent Driver could barely make out the men in the vehicles. They had not left and so Dev knew he had to act quickly. The only thing that was keeping him from rushing out was the crack of lightning not far from the building. Of all things to have a fear of, getting struck by lightning was probably a pretty ridiculous one. His partner was being kidnapped and he was cowering inside.

With a deep breath, Dev ran out after the next lightning strike. “Hey, hey,” he cried out. “Did you guys just come out of that building? Is everyone all right? Is anyone still in the building? Do you need help? I heard the alarm and came over.”

“This is all,” the man answered gruffly. “Now excuse us. We need to get these men to a hospital.”

“I’m first aid certified,” Dev said as he grabbed onto the covered truck. “I’ll get in and help stabilize the injured.”

“I don’t have time to waste with you,” the man said and he pulled out his gun.

“Neither do I,” Dev said, his gun coming out at the same time.

The two waited, a showdown that Dev definitely felt on the disadvantage. The rain was dripping on him and the man was partially in the car. Both were waiting for the other to show a sign of weakness and neither was willing to back down. Dev tightened his grip on the car, and then lightning struck. Not him, but the truck.

The jolt knocked him backwards and his muscles twitched, setting his gun off. He could not tell if there were any more shots fired as the echoing thunder shook his entire body. Dev coughed as he tried to reorient himself and calm his erratic heartbeat. Another gun went off during the gap between lightning strikes and Agent Driver rolled himself over and pointed his gun at the truck, firing the moment he had his aim.

“Thanks,” Jordan said. “Glad to know I wasn’t the only one.”

“Where’d you come from?” Dev demanded.

“The other truck,” Jordan shouted over the next lightning strike.
