“I still can’t believe it actually worked,” Agent Michaels said again. “Seriously. It’s like finding a mouse squeaking in a zoo.”
Dev started laughing. He was actually impressed himself. Tech had actually hacked into the sound alert system and spent a good hour listening to the conversation on the streets. Dev had not even known that was possible, let alone to pinpoint one voice in a sea of them. They had found McFarmer and local authorities picked him up without a problem.
“The first five chords of The Quarks latest song, ‘Atomic’,” Tech wrote on his notepad. The kid’s ability to differentiate different sounds was actually starting to become a game.
“That is amazing,” Driver said as he looked at the random music video he had pulled up.
“I have spent many hours playing ‘Guess That Sound’ with Tech,” Owens admitted. “I think he enjoys it just as much as we do.”
That was more than true, Dev had decided. Tech had admitted that he enjoyed training his hearing by listening to downloaded sounds. In fact, the teen’s music player was actually a bunch of sound clips of different shuttles taking off for flight. Agent Driver was definitely going to keep Tech’s skills in mind next time he got stuck on a case.
“So, what are we supposed to tell Director Bosere?” Regg asked.
“Good question,” Dev said.
“Can I charge a consulting fee?” Owens asked.
“My son was the one who found the scientist,” Vire pointed out. “Wouldn’t he get the consulting fee?”
“Not if he works for me,” Owens teased.
Tech tapped Owens on the shoulder and signed something. Owens had to have Tech repeat it a few times before giving up and admitting that he really needed to work on his sign language skills. Tech smiled and wrote down his question.
“Oh, what I meant by that was that I doubt this will be the only time Dev will come to me for advice,” Owens said. “I figure I should make some sort of business out of it.”
“This isn’t what I meant, dear,” Wilanna said. “Consulting, yes, but I know you won’t do just that.”
“Well of course not,” Owens told his wife. “I’ll just be a sort of consulting, part-time agent.”
“That is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard,” Vire said. “The freelance contract work I do is one thing, but freelance catching bad guys? Isn’t that the same thing as bounty hunters or private investigators?”
“Not if you’re freelance agents,” Dev declared.
Tech gave two thumbs-up to show his approval. Vire tried to tell him that he was not going to be doing this on a daily basis, but soon she joined the group conversation as well. They spent a few more minutes discussing the whole idea as to what it meant to be a freelance agent before Wilanna declared that they were going to be having dinner soon.
“School first,” Vire told Tech. “And no free time hacking or I really will keep you home instead of letting you fly out to meet Carmine.”
“I’ll always ask your permission first, from now on Ms. Morgan,” Agent Driver reassured her.
“I’ll definitely have to talk with Bosere,” Owens said. “I’m sure he could use some freelance agents whenever the agency is busy, or just when he needs the job done.”
